#1 Cancel State Farm by phone (25 minutes)

  1. Call 1-800-STATEFARM (1-800-782-8332)
  2. Provide the following information to the local agent: policy number, name, and date of birth. If you are canceling due to selling your vehicle, also provide proof of plate forfeiture or bill of sale.
    • If you are getting a new insurance policy with a different provider, the agent may ask for the new provider’s name, policy number, and effective date.
The cancellation by phone is usually effective immediately or you can schedule it for a future date.

#2 Cancel State Farm by letter (5-10 business days)

  1. Send a letter that includes the following (template below)
    • Your name, address and phone number.
    • Your State Farm policy number and the date and time you want your policy to end.
    • If you’re switching providers, your new insurer’s name, policy number and policy start date
    • If you’ve sold your vehicle, you may be required to provide proof of plate forfeiture or your bill of sale.
  2. Use this template:
    • Dear State Farm,
      I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you of my intention to cancel my State Farm policy. My name is [Your Name], I live at [Address] and my phone number is [Phone Number]. My State Farm policy number is [Policy Number].       _I would like to cancel my policy effective [Date and Time]. If I am switching to a new insurance provider, my new insurer’s name is [New Insurer’s Name], my policy number is [New Policy Number] and my policy start date is [New Policy Start Date]. _ If applicable, I am enclosing proof of plate forfeiture or my bill of sale as I have sold my vehicle. I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and a confirmation of receipt of this letter. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your understanding and for the services you have provided me in the past. Sincerely, [Your Name]
  3. Make sure to sign, date and send your letter at least two weeks prior to your planned cancellation date, to allow for sufficient delivery and processing time. The address for mailing the letter is provided below.
  4. Sign, date and mail your letter at least two weeks before your intended cancellation date
  5. Send letter to the following address: Corporate Headquarters - State Farm Insurance, One State Farm Plaza, Bloomington, IL 61710

#3 Cancel State Farm in-person (30-60 minutes)

This is the most cumbersome approach and must go into your branches office during opening hours. If you do go in person, you should be prepared to bring the following information with you:
  • Your name, address and phone number.
  • Your State Farm policy number and the date and time you want your policy to end.
  • If you’re switching providers, your new insurer’s name, policy number and policy start date.
  • If you’ve sold your vehicle, you may be required to provide proof of plate forfeiture or your bill of sale.
